Montemerano is a charming village in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, located on a hill between Saturnia and Manciano, surrounded by the countryside of the Maremma, and protected by a medieval wall

The village of ancient origins, has preserved its medieval aspect, with its beautiful church, castle, cobbled streets and quaint castle square surrounded by stone buildings.

Walking through the narrow streets, you can feel the atmosphere of ancient times: it seems that “the time has stopped and you listen to the silence,” reads a plaque commemorating the former monastery of the parish.

Located five minutes from the spa town of Saturnia and the golf course, in 2014 Montemerano was incorporated in the Club of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy.
Dating from the fifteenth century, the medieval tower, carefully restored, stands inside the walls to the west.

Montemerano is ideal for a day of peace and relaxation, alternating with trips to discover the treasures of Tuscany: the ancient villages of Pitigliano and Sovana, Mount Amiata, the Terme di Saturnia and the sea of Argentario.

The medieval tower is the highest and most beautiful of the bastions that fortified the boundary walls on the way to the hospital. It was probably built under the Basque dominion (early 1300) and afterwards restored by the Sienese at the beginning of the XV century. It was erected close to the bastions of the walls for improving sighting capacity thus the defense of the castle. The small window of the guardhouse, made of withe travertine and crowned by a coat of arms, is a typical element of the tower.

At the beginning of 1900 a small balcony was added, harmoniously hosted between the tower and the walls.
